Outfit of the Day:

It’s Thursday! Hi hi hi! Welcome to the brightest outfit I could possibly accidentally piece together. I was invited to my friend’s beach house along the Great Ocean Road and packed quickly not realising how bright my Baggu backpack and my favourite skirt would be against the only jacket I had brought with me.

Disclaimer: My sock is hanging from my backpack cos I was stupid enough to stand in the water when a wave came in and it soaked my feet (sorry, one foot…)… (Not the brightest kid)

Items: A handcrotched beanie from l’ex, vintage denim shirt, Alpha60 for Sportsgirl pleat shoulder cropped velvet top, thrifted fuchsia paisley maxi skirt, thrifted waxed brown Dr Martens, dark pink anorak, peach Baggu canvas backpack, Topshop socks, Alpha60 pleat scarf, Verameat dino&chickenbone ring

INSPIRATION: Sheer madness

There’s something undeniably sensual about a sheer kaftan. The materials generally carry a great amount of drape, there’s usually intricate embroidery or beading. And they look great thrown over anything - your summer bikini, a long black maxi. It’s all about letting the kaftan do the talking, and boy-oh-boy are you going to get the kabana boy’s attention in this purple lace number.

This week we have in store a divine lace kaftan which slips effortlessly over your head. The hem is scalloped and the beading is hand stitched. Wear it over a black dress like we have or even better a white floor length maxi!

Check out the other items in our store.

INSPIRATION: Forever Royal.

That’s it. This is our second post on the colour purple and I have a feeling it isn’t going to be our last. There’s just something about this colour this season. I’ve seen lots of reds and bright pinks in store, but purple is something people usually miss.

I remember in high school, all the girls who were in the purple “house” were so proud to be so - now I know why. The renown royal colour stands out among the crowd of your usual suspects.

Last time we had three purple items in stock. This time, two. A lovely purple knit with a unique front panel contrast knit and an amazing lace kaftan which we will blog about shortly.

Find them both in our store

INSPIRATION - It’s all beginning now, baby blue

The Queen’s Jubilee was a few weeks ago but it seems like the big fashion houses are still celebrating ROYALTY with many collections taking on the baby blue colour that looks so fabulous on Marie Antoinette, another famous Queen. We just watched Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette the other day and the baby blues were just so delicious we were delighted to see the colours splashed all over the runways!

Whether it be a sweet powder blue dress (POWER DRESSES, phroarrrr Chanel!), delicate suits (a la RN) or just a hint of the colour peeping through (like Balenciaga), we think this colour is really going to take off.

We have three baby/powder blue items in our store, so get hopping and save thousands:

a) Pussy bow shirt

b) Blue and black knit

c) Blue coat

INSPIRATION: Oversized Coats

We’ve been complaining about the cold for weeks, but Winter (that bitch!) still won’t let up :( I wish I was a grizzly bear and could hunker down in a warm, dark cave and hibernate for a few months (with a television and rations of snacks) until this freezing weather goes away.

The second best thing is of course a second skin, a coat that fits like a cocoon, a coat that boasts deep pockets to hide gloved hands and extra change to buy hot coffees to hold close to our faces to keep warm. We’re all about outerwear with generous proportions, taking inspiration from sartorial shapes from the 1980s and Isabel Marant’s winter collections.

We have a sweeping camel wool number and a rich maroon concoction for you to hibernate in this Winter!

INSPIRATION: POWER DRESSING in RED

While the seventies was a decade to let everything loose, in free-flowing crochet dresses and flares, the 1980s saw clothes get tighter, skirts shorter, jackets wider and pants get lycra-fied!

It was a period of excess and it certainly showed in the fashion of the times. More and more women were entering the workforce and dressing the part. Female silhouettes were heavily exaggerated by designers like Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Armani, with strong, broad shoulders featured on blazers and paired with impossibly slim fitting trousers and skirts to show their power and equality with men.

This week we have an amazing 80s dress that has just the right degree of crazy to its proportions: fitted skirt and wide pleated batwing sleeves , we can totally see Florence Welch belting out a ballad in this and some sky-high stilettos! What’s says POWER more than fiery red, right Kanye?

THEME SONG #2.

We’re holding our POWER week this week where we embrace all things WOMAN. This song is a wonderful anthem about self-love and self-appreciation!

Don’t have us cos we’re beautiful xx

INSPIRATION - WIDE LEG PANTS

Yoooo weeee! It’s power week and what’s more powerful to a woman than “wearing the pants” (figuratively and literally!). We love that we’re growing up in a society where women play more important roles - I mean, Amie and I both want to rule this world with our creative input one day!

Here at Honest Folk, we think wide leg pants are the sexiest kind of trouser. It’s kind of like the geisha hint-of-skin-to-arouse thing - high waisted wide leg pants show off anyone’s gorgeous waist line and only gives a hint of shape of the rest of your lower half. What’s under there? 3 legs? One leg? OMG is she a mermaid? No, seriously though, the slight shape given around the waist and hips would be enough to drive a man crazy!

We’ve included some more dressed up stylings for wide leg pants - think pairing them with a shirt or a blouse. Or try it casually with a singlet or baggy silk tshirt or even swap your heels for a pair of trainers!

If this all sounds appealing to you, check out our electric blue wide leg trousers in our store! xx

INSPIRATION - BOY

Man styling is a wonderful look. Dress like you rule the world - ‘cos as Beyonce once told us, we do. Trousers, shorts and blazers - we’re all about this power look. Trousers with crisp white shirts under a gorgeous tweed blazer. Dress like you’re about to go to prep school… or to teach a lecture in some prim college overseas. Play the part with these items:

TWEED BLAZER
BEIGE PLEAT FRONT SHORTS
BLACK DOUBLE BREASTED COAT

INSPIRATION: LEATHER PANTS

Every winter comes and leather is in again! High waisted leather pants is where it’s at. No more biker jackets. It’s all about flaunting your waist and your womanly curves! Helmut Lang and Proenza Schouler are all on the ball with this and so should you! We’ve found the perfect dove grey pair of leather trousers and they’re buttery soft! Take a leaf from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s casual grunge style and team it with a loose white tshirt or wear it with some fur for extra luxe.

INSPIRATION: PURPLE HAZE

I’m dip-dye-ing my hair lavender this week so it’s no wonder than we’ve got purple on the brain! From the palest lilac, boldest magenta, to deep violet, the colour purple encompasses the coolest to the warmest hues to flatter all skin tones and is a big winner this winter. It’s the colour of nobility, Barney the dinosaur and Prince was pretty big fan for a while :P So from rock to royalty and everywhere in between get your purple on!    - A

INSPIRATION: MATOAKA

We grew up watching Disney classics such as Cinderella, Pocahontas, Snow White etc etc. The heroines were dreamy, strong-willed and were role-models to look up to (at the time, I mean we were little!). The story of Matoaka or Pocahontas (her nickname which translates to “little wanton”) was striking for me, I thought her free-spirit was inspirational. This is probably where my love for Native Indian culture began, getting to visit the National Museum of American Indians in NYC solidified this. Drawing inspiration for one of my childhood heroines, we found this gorgeous corduroy bib front long sleeved dress. The tan colour is reminiscent of the dress that Pocahontas wore in the 1995 Disney movie! If you were inspired by Pocahontas when you were younger, you should definitely check out our pocahontas dress!!
